OCT – Optical Coherence Tomography

To provide you with the most comprehensive eye health testing available today, we have invested in the gold standard of Optical Coherence Tomography, the Carl Zeiss Cirrus HD-OCT.

Our OCT is a sophisticated scanning system that produces highly detailed 3D images of the internal structures of your eyes. Optical Coherence Tomography could be compared to MRI or an ultrasound of the eye. So it allows the Optometrist to view the deepest layers of your eyes, not visible with other testing equipment.

How does OCT it work?

It only takes a few seconds for a specialized laser camera to capture the data required.  No part of the machine actually touches your eye, so it is completely painless.  The images and data are digitally stored. Furthermore, it can digitally viewed in 3D, in high definition.

For future reference, we’ll store your OCT scans. We use these records to compare and monitor changes in your eyes over time. Similarly, we can predict your eye’s future with some certainty.

How will you benefit from OCT?

It is natural for your eyes to change as you age.  Some changes will go unnoticed and are difficult to detect using traditional eye testings methods. OCT means we can identify eye health problems long before you experience any noticeable symptoms. Subsequently, you can protect your vision for the long term with appropriate preventative treatments.

This cutting edge technology allows us to more accurately identify and treat eye disease and conditions including glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and optic nerve damage. As these conditions can cause vision impairment and even blindness, early detection and management can help to safeguard your vision into the future.

Who should have an OCT?

If you are over the age of 40, have a family history of eye conditions or have experienced symptoms associated with glaucoma or macular degeneration, an OCT scan is essential in providing the best eye care possible.

We recommend that OCT be part of every regular eye health examination and more frequently depending on your eye health status. Considering it provides earlier diagnosis against very devastating diseases, we believe it is well worth it. We will discuss the cost of OCT with you beforehand.  Medicare does not currently provide a rebate for OCT.
